Mr. Hapgood....

This is from Kurt Vonnegut's Jailbird. I've not read it in 30 years, but some things stick with you.

Now Powers Hapgood came into the restaurant, an ordinary-looking Middle Western Anglo-Saxon cheap business suit. He wore a union badge in his lapel. He was cheerful. He knew my father slightly. He knew Uncle Alex quite well. He apologized for being late. He had been in court morning, testifying about violence on a picket line some months before. He personally had had nothing to do with the violence. His days of derring-do were behind him. Never again would he fight anybody, or be clubbed to his knees, or be locked up in jail.

He was a talker, with far more wonderful stories than Father or Uncle Alex had ever told. He was thrown into a lunatic asylum after he led the pickets at the execution of Sacco and Vanzetti. He was in fights with organizers for John L. Lewis's United Mine Workers, which he considered too right wing. In 1936 he was a CIO organizer at a strike against RCA in Camden, New Jersey. He was put in jail. When several thousand strikers surrounded the jail, as a sort of reverse lynch mob, the sheriff thought it best to turn him loose again. And on and on. I have put my recollections of some of the stories he told into the mouth of, as I say, a fictitious character in this book.

It turned out that he had been telling stories all morning in court, too. The judge was fascinated, and almost everybody else in court was, too - presumably by such unselfish high adventures. The judge had encouraged Hapgood, I gathered, to go on and on. Labor history was pornography of a sort in those days, and even more so in these days. In public schools and in the homes of nice people it was and remains pretty much taboo to tell tales of labor's sufferings and derring-do.

I remember the name of the judge. It was Claycomb. I am able to remember it so easily because I had been a high-school classmate of the judge's son, "Moon."

Moon Claycomb's father, according to Powers Hapgood, asked him this final question just before lunch: "Mr. Hapgood," he said, "why would a man from such a distinguished family and with such a fine education choose to live as you do?"

"Why?" said Hapgood, according to Hapgood. "Because of the Sermon on the Mount, sir."

And Moon Claycomb's father said this: "Court is adjourned until two P.M."

Amazon's $5 albums for April 2011

Every month Amazon sells 100+ albums in mp3 format for $5.00. It's why I've been doing most of my music shopping from Amazon rather than iTunes. It's a relatively inexpensive way to check out some really good music. Unlike the iTunes store, where a sale is a clue to crap, Amazon puts the good stuff on sale. For instance:

Raphael Saadiq, The Way I See It.  Old School R & B. Saadiq's band backed Mick Jagger at the Grammys this year.
Lucinda Williams Little Honey  I haven't heard anything of hers that I don't like. Sort of Americana/Country something.
John Coltrane, A Love Supreme  Right?
Old Crow Medicine Show.  O.C.M.S.  Modern Bluegrass.

There's also greatest hits packages for the Ramones, Creedence, R.E.M., Patsy Cline, Ray Charles and others. I like those for artists that I'm curious about but don't know where to start (Like Patsy Cline).

Technical Debt

There's been a discussion about MySpace's fall from grace. This post just went  up and it includes this phrase:

… they were racking up technical debt at an alarming rate.

Really interesting idea that I'd not heard expressed that way, but which I understood immediately.

Diablo Canyon

Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant

Diablo Canyon is designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake from four faults, including the nearby San Andreas and Hosgri faults.[1] Equipped with advanced seismic monitoring and safety systems, the plant is designed to shut down promptly in the event of significant ground motion.

In case you've forgotten, the quake that Japan is reeling from was a 9.0 magnitude quake. Next time someone from PG&E says safety is job one, ask them about San Bruno.

After Today's iTunes update

iTunes was unable to load data class information from Sync Services. Reconnect or try again later. and iTunes could not back up the iPhone "Lee Hinde's iPhone" because the backup session failed.

That's happening on the iPad and the iPhone (4).
